Library Management
Glenn Sanders is very experienced in all aspects of library management, particularly relating to resource sharing, splitting and merging, outsourcing, user surveys and computerisation. His Library projects include:
o A review of the operations, user needs and automated systems of the library of the Queensland Premier’s Department, including detailed cost benefit studies, and technical evaluations. He prepared RFI specifications, and advised the Department on their evaluation and selection of a replacement system.
o Advising several small and medium-sized businesses on their options for setting up a library service
o A review of the operations, user needs and automation needs of the Australia-wide library network of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, including a detailed cost benefit analysis, and preparation of functional specifications for a computer system. He then advised the Tribunal during their evaluation and selection of a computer system.
o A report on the need for an interlibrary loan module for the Australian Bibliographic Network. This has now been implemented and is one of ABN’s most effective services.
o Preparation of the first Australian guide to interlibrary loan and document delivery. (Canberra: ACLIS, 1993), and subsequent revision of the Australian interlending code.
o A report on the possibility and desirability of full or partial outsourcing of the library of a leading State Government Department.
o Advising the libraries of the Australian Securities Commission on their selection and implementation of an automated system linking seven sites on a wide area network across Australia.
o Preparation of a strategic options and detailed cost benefit study, together with comprehensive functional specifications, for the computerisation of the library of the Graduate School of Business, University of Sydney. This study included the need to link CD ROM databases across disparate networks, and internationally.
o A study of the costs of servicing external library users, for Unison, a cooperative of all academic libraries in NSW.
o A strategic study on options for upgrading and linking the computer systems of the libraries in all South Australian TAFE Colleges.
o A strategic study on options for upgrading and linking the library systems of all South Australian Schools.
o Consulting on software development, and preparation of detailed functional specifications, for three leading commercial library management systems
o Marketing surveys and advertising advice to several leading library software suppliers
o Advising the Library of the Sydney Opera House on the selection and implementation of a networked scanning system for their collection of 5.5 million press clippings
o Advising on the implementation of computerised library management systems for over sixty libraries in all sectors and of all sizes.
Records and Document Management
Glenn Sanders has wide experience in records and document management, particularly in developing strategies to ensure that new technologies will converge successfully to cater for both electronic and paper documents.
He has also developed policies and procedures to allow for the successful implementation of decentralised data entry for the control of electronic documents. Some of his projects include:
o Implementing computerised or manual records systems for several small and medium-sized businesses
o A strategic study of the records management needs of the Queensland Premier’s Department, including controlling electronic as well as paper documents, spread across several LANs and three different hardware platforms. We assessed the market by issuing an RFI specification, and recommended strategies and implementation plans covering hardware, software and staffing, together with a full cost benefit analysis.
o A strategic study of the records management requirements of the Australian Securities Commission. This involved assessing the current and archival records of eight State and Territory corporate affairs offices prior to the establishment of the ASC, recommending how and to what extent they should be carried over to the ASC, and recommending priorities and strategies for records management staffing, workflows and computer systems.
o A strategic study of the records management options of the South Australian Housing Trust, including coordinating decentralised operations in 18 offices across the state, and taking into account increasing use of electronic mail and the need for electronic document management.
o A study of the records management needs of the Legal Aid Commission of NSW, including decentralised operations throughout the state. Following this, he managed a project to re-index, re-jacket, and computerise the management of, the Commission’s administrative files.
o A strategic study of the records and document management requirements of Warringah Council, including assessing the adequacy of existing file indexing and control methods, and recommending future directions including the need for corporate-wide task tracking and document management, within an overall environment directed to improved client service.
o Consulting on software development, and preparation of detailed functional specifications, for two leading records management systems.
o A study of the archival records management requirements of Tomago Aluminium Pty Ltd, particularly a detailed study of the costs and benefits of preservation microfilming and the use of in house facilities or bureau services.
o Managing the implementation of a computerised records management system for the Federal Department of Community Services. This included setting up new staffing levels, revising workflows and procedures, overhauling indexing methodologies, and managing the barcoding and microfilming of the jackets of 35,000 files in seven buildings. This project was then repeated in the Department’s Adelaide branch.

Glenn Sanders has wide experience in technical writing, training and documentation. He can also help you with Web Page design, especially building logical and useful hypertext links. Glenn has:
o Developed a user documentation standard for the WorkCover Authority of NSW, and then developed a 200 page user manual for one of the Authority’s major computer systems
o Prepared the first edition of the Australian guide to interlibrary loan and document delivery (Canberra: ACLIS, 1993. ISBN 1875351116), and subsequently prepared a major revision of the Australian Interlibrary Loan Code
o Written and published Introducing Ausmarc (Sydney: Sanders Information Management Services, 1984, reprinted with revisions, 1985 ISBN 0959022805), a workbook for librarians which has been recommended reading at several universities
o Written database quality and data entry standards manuals for CAVAL Limited, a consortium of Academic libraries and the State Library in Victoria
o Developed, as one of a team of three, a training package for library technicians in the Australian Public Service. This package replaced a one year, part time examination course previously offered by the Library Association.
o Implemented over 60 major computer systems in libraries or records management sections, including database design, conversion of data from old systems, staff training, and the integration of workflows, procedures and documentation with the new systems
o Developed records management procedure manuals or guidelines as part of strategic studies and implementation projects for

o Developed and presented a series of one day seminars for the Australian Library and Information Association. These seminars were repeated throughout Australia.
o Provided software development consultancy services for three commercial software systems for libraries and records management, and was software development manager for two other systems
