I specialise in bridging the gap between systems (computerised or not) and users, ensuring that systems are integrated closely with optimum workflows and procedures, and that your corporate objectives are met. While I concentrate on information, library and records management, I also work in the general computer industry and small business.

Unfortunately (or otherwise) there is only one of me. If I’m tied up on a big project I may not be available. Sometimes I take a fulltime job! Contact me anyway, I may be able to suggest where else you can get advice.

Strategic, Needs & Cost Analyses

I can help you to

  • review your overall operations
  • identify your needs and those of your users or clients
  • compare present operations with your corporate goals
  • identify your strategic options
  • analyse the costs and benefits of those options
  • prepare reports and proposals as the basis for decisions

Computer System Specification, Selection & Implementation

If you wish to install, upgrade or replace a computer system, I can

  • prepare specifications
  • help you evaluate proposals
  • advise on or manage the implementation of the new system
  • brief you on the strengths and weaknesses of systems that you should consider for evaluation

Systems Analysis & Software Development

I can analyse and specify workflows and procedures (computerised or not), to help you fine tune your operations or develop or enhance computer software.

I have worked directly with software companies to specify and develop major modules of several commercial systems for library or records management.

Staff Training & Documentation

I prefer not to do just training! I would rather work with you to develop training packages that you can use often, and easily change as your needs change. When I do run training sessions, I also make sure that your staff can then train others, using the package I have developed.

Documentation is always a chore, but I actually like doing it. I can analyse your operations and prepare manuals, or take your existing documentation and upgrade it. I like to present you with documentation that you can easily upgrade later if you wish.

Marketing & Market Research

Launching a new product in the records or library management market is not done lightly. I can assess your system, identify its market, advise on advertising and marketing strategies, and brief you on your competitors in the marketplace.

Imaging, Data Capture & Conversion

If you are thinking of replacing your paper-based records with scanning and imaging, I can help you allocate priorities to different types of records, and identify the most cost effective way of implementing the new system. I pay special attention to integrating this with your core activities, and ensuring a smooth transition from the old files oriented approach to the modern document oriented approach.

There are several strategies and methods for converting manual records into electronic form, or for transferring data from one computer system to another. I can advise you of the most appropriate strategy for each type of record, and specify any programming required.

Research

I can help you research almost anything! I may not know anything about the topic in question, but I do know how to research. I can

  • develop and evaluate surveys
  • review the literature
  • identify and interview experts
  • prepare reports

If you have a need but not the knowledge, or the time to do the research, talk to me – I will soon tell you if it is outside my experience or abilities.
